176kg Mbanje haul in Masvingo

POLICE in Masvingo have arrested six suspected drug peddlers from Mucheke suburb after they found them in possession of 176 kg of dagga.The street value of the drug haul could not be ascertained by the time of going to Press yesterday.

Masvingo acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna confirmed the incident which occurred on Monday.

He identified the suspects as Patience Kwirirai, 29, Germany Madzova, Felix Muango, Definite Chikuni, Susan Ziyambe and Norita Mararo (ages not given), all of Mucheke suburb.

The six are expected to appear in court soon facing charges of possessing dangerous drugs.

“I can confirm the arrest of six suspects in connection with dagga found in their possession in Mucheke suburb. The suspects are in custody helping police with their investigations and are expected to appear in court soon,” said Asst Insp Nduna.

He said police detectives arrested the peddlers after receiving a tip off from members of the public.

Sources allege the suspects are well known drug peddlers in Mucheke suburb.

They said the gang has a history of dealing in illicit drugs and openly sell dagga.

“The suspects were now selling mbanje in the open especially at beer halls with others selling it to school children. I think they get the drugs from Mozambique via Chiredzi’s Chikwalakwala Border post,” said a resident from Mucheke who asked not to be named.

In January this year, traffic police in Masvingo manning a roadblock arrested a suspect who was part of a three-member drug peddling syndicate at the 43 km along the Masvingo-Mutare road. The suspect was allegedly found in possession of 103 kg of mbanje with a street value of $10,300.
