TWO people died on the spot while 41 others were injured after a bus they were travelling in rammed into a stationary haulage truck in Beitbridge on Saturday night. The accident occurred at around 9PM on the 319 kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.

Insp Ndebele said the Mandaza bus was coming from Harare, heading towards the border town when it rammed into the truck.

The bus driver and another passenger died in the accident.

“I can confirm that two people died on the spot, including the driver, when a Mandaza bus they were travelling in rammed into a haulage truck which had broken down opposite an Engen filling station,” said Insp Ndebele.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver could’ve been speeding or failed to pay attention to the signs on the road.”

Insp Ndebele said the injured were ferried to Beitbridge District Hospital and 23 have so far been discharged.

He urged motorists to adhere to road rules and regulations during the forthcoming festive season.

“Motorists are urged to look out for road signs as we approach the festive season. This particular accident occurred at a place where the maximum speed limit is 60 kilometres per hour. We don’t expect an accident to occur where a vehicle rams into a stationary truck as this causes an unnecessary loss of lives,” said Insp Ndebele.

There has been an increase in the number of accidents along the Harare-Beitbridge highway. Police have said most of the accidents occur after 7PM.
