The Government has identified 200 dams across provinces to be part of the Command Fisheries Programme aimed at enhancing food and nutrition requirements of the country.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate, through the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA) and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa), has invited members of the public who wish to participate in the Command Fisheries Programme to apply for permits to carry out cage production of fish.

“Initially 200 dams have been identified in the country to be considered for commercial cage production of fish.

“Members of the public interested in venturing into commercial cage production of fish are invited to submit their applicants at ZPWMA offices,” reads a statement from the ministry.

It said dams that have been identified for cage culture are located in all the eight non-metropolitan provinces in the country.

Last month, the Government launched the Command Fisheries Programme for Matabeleland South at Mtshabezi Dam where 100 000 fingerlings were stocked in four fish ponds.

The programme, which is spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), has already been launched in Masvingo, Manicaland, Matabeleland North, Mashonaland East, Central and West.

In May this year, President Mugabe initiated the National Command Fisheries scheme during the commissioning of Tokwe Mukosi dam in Masvingo.
