A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Gutu allegedly fatally struck a 96-year-old man with a fist after accusing him of being a wizard.

Sam Manomano of Chaminuka Village under Chief Chimombe allegedly punched Morgan Panganai of Farm 99 Dewure West on the neck on Sunday at around 3PM. Panganai started vomiting blood and was rushed to Gutu Mission Hospital where he died.

He breathed his last a day after the incident.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said: “I have received a report of murder involving a young man and an elderly man. The deceased’s body was taken to Gutu Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.”

She said Panganai and Manomano were at Farm 99 Devure West drinking traditional beer together with Panganai’s nephew, Mr Tavonga Masango (31) of the same village. While drinking beer, police said, Manomano started accusing Panganai of being a wizard, claiming that he had some goblins.

She said Panganai asked Manomano why he was accusing him of witchcraft yet he had no evidence but the younger man became furious.

Insp Mazula said a dispute arose and Manomano punched Panganai who was seated on a stool once on the right side of the neck.

“Panganai fell down and started vomiting blood. Mr Masango rushed him to Gutu Mission Hospital. Panganai however, died on Sunday at around 2PM,” she said.

A report was made at Gutu Police Station leading to Manomano’s arrest.  Insp Mazula said Manomano is assisting with investigations and will appear in court soon facing murder charges.

More than 30 cases of murder have been reported in Masvingo this year.
