THE Civil Service Commission is set to recruit 303 school heads to be deployed in Matabeleland North province.

The school heads are required for both primary and secondary schools.

According to a circular dated 27 June that was issued by Civil Service Commission Secretary Mrs Pretty Sunguro, the deadline for applications is July 27.

“Post: 261 heads (primary) and 42 heads (secondary) Reports to Schools Inspector. Province Matabeleland North,” reads the circular a copy of which is in The Chronicle’s possession.

The circular states that applicants must be certified university graduates with at least two years’ experience as deputy head.

“Thorough understanding of the Education Act, knowledge of the Public Service and Education Regulations, procedures and policies. Must be results oriented and self-driven. Good communication skills at all levels,” it reads.

According to the list of vacant posts, Lupane is on top with 84 schools, Binga 71, Tsholotsho 71, Nkayi 46, Hwange 27, Umguza nine and Bubi four.

Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director Mrs Boithathelo Mnguni said the appointments were overdue.

“We want to make people substantive. We’ve people who have been doing so well in acting positions so I think it’s time they get rewarded for their work. We also feel that it’s abuse of a teacher or deputy head to be conducting duties of a head, a teacher has to be a teacher and a deputy head, a deputy head not to be burdened by duties beyond their positions,” said Mrs Mnguni.

Last month the Government announced that it would be recruiting about 10 000 teachers and headmasters, most of whom would be posted to rural schools in a bid to alleviate the severe shortage of qualified teachers in the country.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cde Lazarus Dokora, told Parliament that the greenlight for his Ministry to recruit was given by Treasury in May.
