POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested four Sixth Form Foundation College pupils in connection with the murder of a man from Nkulumane suburb who they allegedly pounded with a brick, fracturing his skull.

Tsepo Phosa, 19, Zangelo Thebe, 20, Donald Musona, 21 and Mthulisi Sibanda, 21, were arrested on Sunday for the gruesome killing of Vengai Clayton Muza, 27. Muza died on the spot while his friend Brannon Moyo, 29, was left unconscious following the brutal attack allegedly by the high school boys.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango yesterday said one of the four pupils dropped his cellphone at the scene and it was used to trace them.

“One of the suspects dropped his cellphone at the scene where the deceased’s (Muza) body was. We used his cellphone to track and arrest them,” said Insp Simango.

The police spokesperson bemoaned the increased involvement of school going children in criminal activities. “These are young people who should have not been out at almost midnight. They are in Upper Six and were supposed to be studying.

“It’s unfortunate that they were out and ended up attacking someone,” she said. Insp Simango urged parents to take a keen interest in their children’s activities. “I strongly urge parents to closely monitor their children’s activities.

“At a time they were supposed to be preparing for their examinations, they were busy partying and getting drunk,” she said. Insp Simango said the pupils would appear in court soon. Police sources said a fight broke out between Muza, his friend Moyo and the pupils over passage through a bridge in the neighbourhood.

The pupils, said a police source, were coming from one direction while Muza and his friend were going in the opposite direction and they met over a bridge where a misunderstanding ensued over the alleged blocking of a footbridge by one group.

It is claimed that Muza instigated the fight. A number of pupils have been arrested this year after committing various crimes. Recently, a 16-year-old boy from Pumula South suburb allegedly killed his aunt in cold blood in a dispute over a cellphone which contained pornographic material.

In August, more than 250 pupils were arrested for conducting a vuzu party at Umguza Rest Camp. Addressing pupils last week during a high schools debate on crime awareness, the Western division chief public prosecutor, Martha Cheda, urged youths to shun crime as it ruins their future.

“No matter how good your academic performance is, no one would be willing to employ you and for those who may have excelled in their O- and A-Levels and stand a chance of getting a scholarship, that criminal record may prevent you from getting it,” said Cheda.
