Johannesburg — A 450kg man was successfully transported to hospital, after he was turned away from 10 hospitals which said they could not accommodate a person of his size, according to a report.

Eyewitness News reported that 60-year-old Corrie La Grange was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, where he hopes to receive treatment for a medical condition called ascites, which led to his immense weight gain.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, ascites is the result of high pressure in the blood vessels of the liver (portal hypertension) and low levels of a protein named albumin.

Diseases that can result in severe liver damage can lead to ascites, as can certain cancers, clots, congestive heart failure and pancreatitis.

La Grange was lifted from his bed using sheets and ropes by paramedics and his family, and transferred into a vehicle. He told EWN that nobody seemed to want to touch his body.

La Grange said he is in desperate need of help. — AFP
