THE first of the two Football Union of Zimbabwe (Fuz) training camps aimed at helping out-of-contract players to secure clubs started in Harare yesterday with 47 participants.

The camp in Harare which is being held at Motor Action Sports Club will end on Saturday before moving to Bulawayo next week.

Twenty-five Bulawayo-based players have registered for the Southern Region’s camp which will run from January 10-14.

In a telephone interview from Harare yesterday, Fuz president Desmond Maringwa said they are expecting more footballers today, following indications that some players were travelling to the capital.

Among players with Premiership experience who were part of yesterday’s training at Motor Action Sports Club are former Dynamos duo of Brighton Tuwaya and Artwell Mukandi  as well as ex-Triangle United’s Ronald Sengu.

The players in Harare are training under the guidance of former Gunners gaffer Darlington Dodo who had coaching stints in Botswana with Township Rollers and Tafic as well as Naison Muchekela.

“The response has been good, even though the numbers are way lower than what we had last year. In the last training session for out-of-contract players we had about 70 participants. The numbers are likely to rise tomorrow because some of the players have been calling us saying they are travelling and should be      arriving tonight (last night). We also hope the Bulawayo camp will draw a good number,” said Maringwa.

By yesterday evening, Fuz vice-president Hebert Dick said 30 players had registered with their southern region office.

Among those who have registered are ex-Highlanders and Triangle United defender Dumisani “Fazo” Ndlovu, former How Mine left-footed utility player Moses Gutu, Munyaradzi Mungadze of Hwange and left back Julius Daudi whose contract with Highlanders expired on December 31.

Dick encouraged Southern Region based Premiership and First Division clubs to send their technical teams to scout for talent at the Fuz-organised training camp.

“The response has been encouraging and as it is we have 30 players and we expect to have 50 when we start our programme next week. At the beginning of the year we had to cancel the Bulawayo camp because we had a low uptake in the city, but this time around it seems    players are keen on this programme. We’ve also invited all the clubs from this part of the country to send their scouts which we hope they will do,” said Dick.

He said unattached coaches would provide training for the out-of-contract players.
