VICTORIA Falls will play host to five sporting disciplines with about 3 000 athletes and officials in the rebranded National Youth Games that open in the province next week.

Speaking at the Victoria Falls Press Club on Wednesday, Sports and Recreation officer for Hwange district who is heading the local organising committee secretariat in Victoria Falls Jenamiso Ncube said chess, darts, golf, rugby sevens and weightlifting will be held in the resort town.

Chess and darts will be hosted at Mosi-oa-Tunya High School while rugby, golf and weightlifting will be held at Victoria Falls Primary School, Elephant Hills Hotel and Victoria Falls Club respectively.

“The town will host five disciplines with 2 598 athletes excluding their officials,” said Ncube. Hwange will host the majority of the 22 codes while some will be held at Fatima in Lupane, with Bulawayo playing host to hockey and swimming.

Ncube said organisers had set a flat fee of $10 for all those who want to provide service during the games which will end on August 27.

Speaking at the same occasion, Commissioner Clement Mukwasi challenged residents to be innovative and grab the opportunity brought by the games.

There will be 15 provinces namely the traditional 10 administrative provinces and the additional under 23 sides drawn from uniformed forces, community teams and tertiary institutions.

Sub committees are busy on the ground mobilising resources in preparation for the games. — @ncubeleon
