FIVE candidates will battle it out in the Chirumhanzu-Zibagwe constituency by- elections to be held on March 27.
The seat fell vacant following the appointment of Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa as one of the two Vice-Presidents.The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) yesterday confirmed the candidates after the sitting of the nomination court presided over by Midlands Provincial Electoral Officer Dorcas Mpofu at the Gweru magistrate’s court.

The five candidates are Cde Auxillia Mnangagwa of Zanu-PF, Gadzamoyo Dhewa of the Good People’s Movement Party, Munashe Mutodza of National Constitution Assembly (NCA), Willbroad Kanoti an independent candidate and Abigail Musambasi from Transform Zimbabwe.

“We’ve received five nominations from five different parties. We’ll have an inspection tomorrow at this court where we’ll meet all the candidates’ representatives,” said Mpofu.

The three MDCs recently indicated that they would not take part in the by-elections.

Zanu-PF Midlands spokesperson Cde Cornelius Mpereri said he was confident that the revolutionary party will consolidate its dominance in the province and country by winning the seat.

“We’re very confident that we’ll retain the Chirumhanzu-Zibagwe Parliamentary seat,” he said.

Zanu-PF Political Commissar, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, recently said MDCs were boycotting the elections because they feared losing.
He said the MDCs had splintered into tiny factions not strong enough to challenge Zanu-PF.
