SIX people died yesterday in two separate road accidents. Four people were confirmed dead and 20 others injured when their minibus was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry along the Harare-Mutare Highway yesterday evening. The accident occurred between Marondera and Macheke at around 6PM, police said.

Two people were killed and eight others seriously injured in Bulawayo last night when their commuter omnibus collided with a truck.

The accident happened at around 6PM along Burombo Road in Lobengula West suburb.

In the Marondera accident, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, while confirming the deaths, said officers were still attending the scene last night, and accurate information would only be available after they concluded their investigations.

In the Bulawayo accident, witnesses said the kombi driver overtook another minibus before speeding through an intersection in front of oncoming traffic in a rush to get passengers. He rammed into a truck going in the opposite direction.

Scores of Lobengula residents gathered to watch police retrieve the bodies.

Witnesses said the conductor, who was hanging from the window of the vehicle touting for passengers, was crushed to death on impact.

Farai Moyo of Magwegwe West said the truck driver fled from the scene when he realised people had died in the kombi.

“These kombi drivers have no respect for human life, all they want is money,” said Moyo.

“The road was not even busy and the driver couldn’t even see that big truck on the road.”

Four ambulances ferried the injured to Mpilo Central Hospital.

“The second person who died was a woman. She died as she was being taken into the ambulance,” said a witness.

Ten people died while 162 others were injured in 283 road traffic accidents recorded countrywide during the Easter weekend.

During the same period last year, 19 people died while 151 were injured in 206 traffic accidents.
