THE physical abuse of children at children’s homes is worrying and needs to be nipped in the bud, a Masvingo regional magistrate has said.
Speaking during a victim friendly committee meeting held at Masvingo’s regional court on Friday, regional magistrate Colet Ncube said it is always disturbing to hear of the abuse at the institutions that are supposed to be safety zones for children.

The victim friendly committee comprises members of the judiciary, police, Prison and Correctional Services, children’s homes, social services, Legal Resources Foundation, the media, among others.

“While we don’t have statistics and oral evidence, reports that we get from such meetings are disturbing. As legal people who deal with cases of child sexual abuse every day in our courts, we’re concerned with such reports,” he said.

Ncube underscored the importance of instilling discipline among the children as some of them may be delinquent and may abuse others.

The regional magistrate urged matrons at children’s homes to be responsible and ensure the safety and well-being of children under their care.
