ONE person died in a car accident in Bulawayo last night while two others died in Mbalabala on Saturday when a bus carrying Zanu-PF supporters en-route to  Victoria Falls for the 21st February Movement celebrations was involved in a head on collision with a haulage truck.

In last night’s incident which occurred shortly after 7PM along Bulawayo-Harare road near Zuva Service Station in Paddonhurst, the driver of a Nissan Vanette truck was travelling towards the city centre carrying two passengers when he sideswiped with a Mercedes Benz, which was coming from the opposite direction.

According to witnesses, the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a sign post near the service station in Paddonhurst. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals.

When a Chronicle news crew arrived at the accident scene, traffic police officers were removing the body.

Police sources said the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road accident occurred on Saturday shortly after 1.30AM near Filabusi.

The driver of the bus, which was carrying 37 Zanu-PF supporters, died on the spot together with a passenger from the haulage truck.

According to a police source, the bus driver hit a stray donkey, which he was trying to avoid resulting in a head-on collision with the truck, which was heading towards Masvingo.

“The bus was travelling from Masvingo and heading to Bulawayo en-route to Victoria Falls for the 21st February Movement celebrations when its driver hit a donkey and lost control resulting in a head-on collision with a haulage truck,” said the police source.

National police spokesperson Superintendent Paul Nyathi referred Chronicle to traffic national spokesperson Tigere Chigome who declined to comment.
