THE Standards Association of Zimbabwe director-general Dr Eve Gadzikwa is set to become the first woman president of the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO).

ARSO is a continental organisation whose mandate is to facilitate intra-Africa trade through harmonised standards.

A ZBCtv report said Dr Gadzikwa will assume ARSO presidency at the organisation’s 22nd general assembly meeting in Arusha, Tanzania today where Zimbabwe takes over the leadership of the organ.

The ARSO general assembly meeting ends on Thursday.

Dr Gadzikwa told ZBCtv that she would strive to advance the standardisation of goods in line with the regional integration initiative.
Zimbabwe will assume the leadership of the standards body at a time the organisation is implementing a five-year strategic framework which runs until 2017.

One of the key objectives under the strategic framework is to disseminate harmonised standards and guidelines to support intra, inter-African and international trade and industrialisation.

In April, African countries launched the Africa Regional Integration Index that seeks to give answers by scoring and rating the performance of countries on the continent towards integration. The Africa Regional Integration Index is a collaboration between ECA, the African Union and the African Development Bank.

The report is the first systematic, continent-wide instrument for measuring the progress made by the 54 African countries in implementing the continent’s regional integration frameworks.

The report says “Africa’s integration journey towards a more connected, competitive and business-friendly continent is underway and its roadmap is, in some areas, under construction.

Africa’s Regional Integration Index is an action tool measuring the progress of an Africa on the move.”
