Mawabeni, Bungwe School, LM Academy, Nsezi, Sabiwa, Banket, How Mine and Steenboks Clubs took part in the event.
Competition was in men and women’s senior as well as juniors’ categories.
In the 6km junior race for women, Selusiwe Ndlovu of Steenboks came first in 24 minutes 25.54 seconds, Prince Ncube of LM Academy came first in the 8km junior men’s race and his time was 26 minutes 40.25 seconds, Thandiwe Nyathi of LM Academy came first in the senior women’s 8km race and her time was 29 minutes 46.67 seconds.
As expected Nkosiyazi Sibanda of Banket Mine came first in the senior men’s 12km race and his time was 36 minutes 04.99 seconds. He had an average of three minutes per kilometre and if he trains well for the national finals he could be the athlete to beat.
The event was held to select a team to represent the province at the national finals where athletes for the Zimbabwe team for the Southern Region Championships will be identified.
Sibanda is one of the country’s top road runners.
