EMPLOYEES of the Bulawayo City Council’s Health department on Wednesday recovered the remains of a newborn baby by the roadside in Nkulumane 12 while carrying out their cleaning duties.

The baby, wrapped in plastic, was found dumped in Nkulumane’s Ward 23 at around 8AM.

One of the workers, Siphephisiwe Dube, told The Chronicle that she spotted the white plastic bag as they were picking up rubbish in the area. She said the bag was so heavy that the workers decided to open and see the contents.

“We were shocked on seeing legs of a baby. We found the dumped baby girl bleeding from the nose. We immediately called our supervisor who rushed into our nearby council offices to call the police. The police quickly attended the scene,” she said.

“It’s so sad and repelling that one can do this to a baby. As elderly women, it’s actually our dream to have grandchildren and take care of them. We don’t expect people to be killing babies. I wish the culprit is caught and thrown into jail to rot.”

Miriam Maseko said she was drawn to the strange white plastic bag by her colleague, Dube.

“We suspected the plastic bag was filled with pampers, but we were shocked to find a baby. Pampers constitute most of our rubbish loads nowadays,” said Maseko.

She said the baby seemed to have been dead for about a day.

“The baby was wrapped up in a towel then put inside a pink pillowcase which was then placed inside two plastic bags. We suspected the baby could’ve been born and killed the previous night because the body hadn’t yet decomposed. The other thing is fresh blood was oozing out of her nose,” she said.

Duduzile Ntini, a local resident, said the incident had shocked locals.

“If only this woman could’ve dumped the precious baby on my doorstep, without having to kill and dump it like a piece of rubbish, I would’ve been grateful. We suspect the person who did this could’ve come from a distant place to dump the baby here,” she said.
