NINE schools will compete in an Under-16 girls’ basketball tournament at the Dominican Convent in Bulawayo on Saturday. Regina Mundi High and Midlands Christian College from Gweru, St Dominic Secondary (Harare), Goldridge College (Kwekwe), Kyle College (Masvingo) and Bulawayo’s Girls College, Ihlathi High and Montrose High will take part in the tournament.

Dominican Convent sports director Titus Chikonye said the competition would be tough as all schools would be vying to finish tops.

“This tournament will be very exciting and we’re going to witness some tough competition, but at the end there should be a winner and we hope our school will make it to the top,” said Chikonye.

The tournament will be played on a round robin basis with all schools playing as many games as possible to ensure a competitive tournament.

Ihlathi are the defending champions, but are likely to face stiff competition this Saturday as the other schools would also want to secure bragging rights.

“Basketball has come a long way at Convent, starting at the bottom and steadily rising to be a force to reckon with at national level.

“The championship is ours; we’re going to prepare for all matches and take each game as it comes and hope to win them all,” said Chikonye.

The winners will walk away with a shield and gold medals, while the runners-up will get a shield and silver medals and the third placed school will only get bronze medals.
