THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has started construction vending bays along Masotsha Ndlovu adjacent to Highlanders Sports Club in the Central Business District.

BCC Senior Public Relations Officer, Nesisa Mpofu said construction started on November 17 and the target is to complete work by January 15.

“Construction of vending bays for vendors who’ve been moved from the CBD has started and they should be complete by mid this month,” she said.

Mpofu said the project was estimated to cost about $900, 000.

She said the vending bays will be allocated to vendors as soon as work is complete.

“The market has been designed for the selling of both vegetables and second hand clothing.

“Licences to operate at that market will be issued on a first come first served basis. There is a waiting list already but anyone can apply for a bay,” said Mpofu.

The rentals for selling both second hand clothes and vegetables is $14 a month,” she said.

In August, Bulawayo City Council launched a blitz on informal traders operating at undesignated places.

Mpofu said the clamp down followed a directive from central government that all illegal vendors should be removed from the CBD.
