THE Bulawayo City Council has increased the frequency of domestic garbage collection amid fears of a typhoid outbreak after the disease hit the capital.

The local authority has changed its collection schedule from once a month to once a week in some suburbs, while others would have garbage removed twice a month.

A schedule from the director of health services department shows that with effect from 9 April, council has been collecting garbage once every week in the city centre, eastern suburbs and the western suburbs of Makokoba, Mzilikazi, Barbourfields, Nguboyenja and Thorngrove.

The rest of the western suburbs would, beginning on 7 May, have garbage collection done once every two weeks.

The schedule also shows that although frequency of collection has increased, refuse would still be collected on the same week days.

For instance, those who were serviced on a Tuesday would still be serviced on the same day in the new schedule.
“BCC would like to inform residents that domestic refuse will now be collected weekly with effect from 9 April. Please be reminded to take out your bins or refuse bags during the days that there would be collection in your area by 6am. The days of removal will remain the same in your area,” reads part of a notice on the schedule.

The notice also reads: “Disposable bags are sold at the Revenue Hall and Housing Offices for $2 per 10 bags.”

According to the schedule, suburbs that include Lobengula Extension, Lobengula West, New Lobengula, parts of Entumbane, parts of Magwegwe North, Emakhandeni East and West, Nkulumane, Nkulumane 10 and 1, Emganwini, parts of Tshabalala, Pumula South, Nketa 7, 8 and 9, will have refuse removal done in the first and third weeks of every month.”

The other western suburbs and the industrial areas would have collection on the second and fourth week of every month.

Residents are urged to liaise with their councillors for the schedules being used in their areas.

“Residents are encouraged to report litter bugs on (09) 65332,” the report reads.
It urged them to pay their monthly bills in time to assist council to maintain the collection schedule and reduce chances of disease outbreaks in the city.
