BEITBRIDGE Town Council has started identifying major projects for completion in the next 100 days in line with the new Government thrust, an official has said.

Town secretary, Mr Loud Ramakgapola said in an interview yesterday that they compiled a list of quick win projects among them those that had been stalled due to red tape.

He said the town had a deficit of $43 million in terms of implementing service delivery related projects.

“We are in the process of identifying projects that we want completed in the next 100 days and we need at least $43 million. We have so far identified six projects and we have already submitted the list to our parent ministry of Local Government,” said Mr Ramakgapola.

He said the projects included the upgrading of a sewer trunk which will cost $500 000, the completion of the water reticulation infrastructure in the Garikayi/Hlalani Khuhle suburb which needs $4 600 and the construction of a water fountain.

Mr Ramakgapola said council also wanted to resurface the road from Shule-Shule Business centre to Dulivhadzimu bus terminus and upgrade the terminus at a cost of $500 000.

He said they had since applied for borrowing powers to secure funding to pave and construct shades at the bus terminus.

“The terminus will be funded through the Public Sector Investment Programme. In addition we have several outstanding projects hindering service delivery. These are the servicing of 2 133 residential stands, upgrading of 8,9km of sewer reticulation, construction of seven primary and four secondary schools.

“We also have plans to construct at least three clinics and also surface a total of 104km of roads,” said Mr Ramakgapola.

The town secretary said it was critical for central Government to speed up the completion of the Beitbridge Redevelopment Programme as part of the town’s modernisation plan.

He said council was waiting for a response to its application to be granted municipal status.
