THE inaugural Dr Amai Grace Mugabe soccer tournament that was launched at the beginning of this month in Binga roars into life with 10 teams from Zone 1’s five wards clashing for soccer boots. The month-long tournament will see the top two teams in each ward fighting for the prize. Zambezi Tigers and Hunters will clash in the final in Kaani ward, while in Manjolo ward Cheenga and Nalubiyu will battle for honours.

Cremora FC and Hammer Nation will entertain people in the Simatelele ward while Sikalenge and Siabbanga will meet in the Sikalenge ward.

In Sinakoma ward, Sinakoma Strikers and Nsenga Stars will battle for the prize.

The organisers’ communication manager Elias Sibanda said they were excited about the tournament and is hoping the event becomes a success in each ward.

“We’re happy to finally see this project taking off because we put so much effort into it. I would like to urge all zones to emulate Zone 1 because there wasn’t any sign of politics involved as this tournament is for everyone from Binga,” said Sibanda.

“These tournaments are not political events but community development events and we appeal to everyone to embrace them as they’ll help uplift the standards of football in Binga. When the First Lady came to Binga, she didn’t discriminate against anyone along political grounds, therefore we’re following suit by availing these football boots to every soccer team in the district,” he said.

The tournament was launched early this month after the First Lady donated 427 pairs of soccer boots.
