SOME parts of Lupane Centre have gone without water since the beginning of this month due to broken down pumps. The Chronicle visited Lupane Centre recently and noticed residents’ queueing to fetch water from a single borehole near Kusile Rural District Council offices. Only a few properties such as offices had water while residential areas: Hlalani Kuhle area and New Stands and shops did not have running water.

The chairperson of Residents and Ratepayers Association, Mr Christopher Mazibisa, said the situation was critical for residents. “Most houses have been without water for some time now. They restored supplies to some sections on Friday but some are still without water,” said Mr Mazibisa in an interview yesterday.

He said residents engaged the local authority recently and it said the problem was a result of broken down pumps. “They’re saying pumps are too weak to pump water,” added Mr Mazibisa.

The long term solution to perennial water woes in Lupane is the Bubi-Lupane Dam, he said. Mr Mazibisa said they would engage both Zinwa and the local authority over the issue.

Lupane Local Board acting town secretary Mr Roy Moyo referred questions to Zinwa. “Yes we’ve challenges but as a local authority we don’t have rights over the supply of water. It’s Zinwa who can best explain what’s happening,” he said.

No comment could be obtained immediately from Zinwa. Lupane Local Board recently said water challenges were stalling progress in the provincial capital.
