THE fifth edition of the Bob Super Cup will be staged after the 21st February Movement celebrations which are slated for Victoria Falls on February 28, an official said yesterday.Harare giants Dynamos are the defending champions of the competition which is part of the celebrations to mark President Robert Mugabe’s birthday that falls on February 21.  On Saturday, President Mugabe celebrates his 91st birthday and the football competition will be known as the Bob 91 Super Cup.

Last year the tournament had three clubs – Dynamos, Highlanders and Harare City. By virtue of being champions, Dynamos got a bye while Bosso and Sunshine Boys fought for the final slot which went to Bulawayo giants who went on to lose to DeMbare.

In a telephone interview from Harare yesterday, founding chairman of the Bob Super Cup Stan Kasukuwere said they are working hand in hand with the Zanu PF’s Youth League to make sure that they stage a successful gala in Victoria Falls and the tournament which will be played in Bulawayo and Harare.

“We’re continuing celebrating President Mugabe’s birthday with pomp and fanfare through football. After consultations with party officials it was seen proper to have the football tournament which will be played in Harare and Bulawayo staged after the national celebrations of the 21st February Movement in Victoria Falls this month end. We’re helping the Youth League so that the event in Victoria Falls is a success,” said Kasukuwere.

The first edition of the competition was won by Dynamos who beat Caps United 3-2 in 2011; FC Platinum lifted the Bob 88 Super Cup in 2012 after overcoming Hwange in the final.

Harare giants DeMbare then went on to reclaim the trophy in 2013 in a final that was played over two legs with the first in Bulawayo and the last in Harare. Dynamos successfully defended the tournament last season and they will be eager to hold on to the trophy this year.

Organisers of the Bob 91 Super Cup are still pondering on whether to increase teams that will participate in this year’s edition.

“We’re still consulting on the format of this year’s celebrations which we want to be bigger and better than the previous one. We want to improve on the quality of the game with spectators in mind. Already, we’ve been in constant communication with the Premier Soccer League chairman Twine Phiri about the Bob 91 Super Cup and we’re happy that he understands the concept of the tournament which is to celebrate President Mugabe’s birthday with the masses,” Kasukuwere said.

The Bob 91 Super Cup which has become a traditional season opener for the domestic league also presents an opportunity for participating teams to test their level of preparedness before going for the marathon league.
