FORMER Bulawayo giants Highlanders’ Under-17 midfielder Brandon Rendo has retraced his steps to the coal mining town and is itching to be part of Hwange coach, Mebelo Njekwa’s 2017 Premiership squad.

Rendo (18), a product of Luveve’s Big Eleven Academy owned by Highlanders assistant coach Amini Soma-Phiri, is a grandson to Hwange FC legend Amos Rendo.

“I have a strong feeling that the exposure I got in Bulawayo from time at the academy, Old Nic Mine FC and as a Highlanders junior in 2015 and 2016 will help me.

“My childhood desire was to play for Chipangano one day and fill in the big shoes left by my grandfather when he was a player. I will attend trials and work very hard to be part of the squad,” said Rendo who was also a vital cog in the Matabeleland North football team at the National Youth Games in Chinhoyi last year.

Amos backed his grandson to be a success if he gets a chance at the coalminers.

“I have faith in the youngster, he can be an integral part at Hwange if he impresses during trials. Football at most times runs in a family and I am challenging him to keep the name alive in the game.

“One good thing is that Njekwa is a firm believer in junior footballers,” he said from his Mabale base, some 70km from Hwange.

Njekwa said he is open to any player coming for trials at his team.

“I have heard about the player and once saw him train with Makomo FC during off season. He is welcome to come and slug it out alongside others and see how it works out,” said Njekwa.
