HIGHLANDERS’ South African Supporters’ Chapter has refuted claims that they were given an account number to deposit money for the club’s replica jerseys they had sold across the Limpopo.

Bosso secretary-general Emmett Ndlovu was allegedly robbed of the money at gunpoint in South Africa on the morning of September 29 after it was handed to him by the South African fans on September 27.

Ndlovu lost $300, P300 and R25,000 in the Johannesburg eastern suburb of Edenvale. Of this money, R14,500 was for the Bosso replica jersey sales.

Highlander’s chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede had said the South African Supporters’ Chapter had been given the club’s banking details to deposit the money and alleged that Ndlovu had collected the cash without the knowledge of other executive members.

However, both the South African Chapter’s chairman Daniel Molokele and secretary-general Khumbulani Moyo said claims they were instructed to deposit the money into a given bank account are not true.

“I don’t remember us getting any account number, but since the man who has been dealing with this whole issue is our secretary, I suggest you get in touch with him,” said Molokele yesterday.

Moyo said back in June when he was in Zimbabwe, he met with Ndlovu and they discussed the idea of having replica jerseys sold in South Africa as a way of assisting the club financially.

“Emmett said since the jerseys were club property, I have to go through the office where all the formalities could be done and we were given an official receipt acknowledging the number of jerseys we had taken,” said Moyo.

When they had sold all the jerseys, Moyo said they phoned Emmett and he told them that he would be in South Africa to see his doctor.

“That is when we said it would be convenient for us to give the money to him (Ndlovu) because it will save the club. We were never given any account as claimed. These jerseys were sold at R500 each and that translates to about $35 or even less with the present exchange rate. If we then sent the money through other means plus the costs involved, we might have then sold those jerseys at an average of $25 or so,” said Moyo.

“We were not given any account number. Maybe they gave it to someone else, but as the secretary, I didn’t get it. I think in future we need to have the club account; we have ours here as a chapter. We will be meeting very soon about what befell Emmett even though he promised us that he will pay back the money. It’s sad that all sorts of theories are now coming up, but documentation to prove that everything was done above board is there. He signed for it and our treasurer Alexander Maseko can prove that,” said Moyo.
