THE Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) will hold an open national team selection tournament in Victoria Falls on Saturday as part of the Zone IV Games to be held in Angola next month.

The tournament, organised by Matabeleland North Province, will see amateur boxers from various ZBF affiliated clubs from across the country battling for selection into the national team for the Zone IV Games from April 25-30.

ZBF vice-president Isaac Goora said a number of teams have confirmed participation, among them, the Army School of Physical Training and Sports, Headquarters 2 Infantry Brigade, 3 Infantry Brigade, Mbare Boxing Club and St Mary’s Boxing Club.

“All is now set for the big day where spectators are going to be treated to various forms of entertainment in addition to watching top class boxing from young pugilists eager to impress the coaches and make it into the Angola bound boxing national team.

“People in Matabeleland North are all invited to come and see some of the finest fighters the country has to offer as they battle it out in the country’s prime resort towns,” said Goora.

“The tournament is the second this year following the one staged in Nyanyadzi, Manicaland, on February 25.”

ZBF president Jim Mpalale said boxing fans will not be disappointed, as the new executive council has rolled out one the most exciting boxing calendars, which will see more events coming up at various places.

He said international boxing tournaments also make up part of the calendar.

“We intend to restore boxing to its former glory days through running the sport in a transparent and professional manner and I want to appeal to the corporate world to give my executive a chance to develop the sport,” said Mpalale.
