HEAVY rains are expected in some areas including Nyamandlovu, Tsholotsho and Kezi with the possibility of floods starting on Monday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned.

The Head of the MSD’s Public Weather Services, Tich Zinyemba, said a cloud system moving from South Africa and Botswana, will bring the heavy rains.

“In general rains are expected countrywide on the 25th and 26th but by Wednesday through to Thursday, the rains should mainly be confined to Mashonaland provinces and Manicaland. Of note, however are the rains in excess of 80 mm that are expected in the Nyamandlovu, Tsholotsho, Kezi, Gweru and Zvishavane areas on the 26th and in Mashonaland provinces on the 27th,” said Zinyemba.

He said a cloud system over Botswana and South Africa is forecast to move into Zimbabwe by Monday through Matabeleland provinces.

“This is expected to spread further into the country and indications are that there would be sharp downpours that might lead to potential flash floods,” said Zinyemba.

The weather man said temperatures have been high and potential thunderstorms maybe accompanied by large hail and damaging winds.

“In closing, the Meteorological Services Department reminds the public of the following; do not take shelter under trees during a thunderstorm as there is enhanced risk of being struck by lightning. People should refrain from parking vehicles under big and old trees as these may fall down,” he said.

“All outdoor activities should be planned with the weather in mind. There is danger of electricity poles falling over thus increasing the risk of electrocution when cables are handled carelessly. Motorists should exercise extra caution on poorly maintained roads.”
