A collision between a haulage truck and a cross-border Tombs Motorways bus killed three people and seriously injured five early this morning.

The incident occurred around 4.30 am near Lundi Bridge along the Zvishavane-Gweru highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the Gweru bound bus which had 60 people onboard, was coming from Beitbridge when it sideswiped a haulage truck which had overhanging pipes that ripped off the windscreen of the bus resulting in the driver losing control.

The driver of the haulage truck did not stop after the accident.

A survivor, Mr Aaron Mangoma said after the driver lost control of the bus, it swerved off the road and overturned before landing on its roof killing three on the spot.

“It was around 4.30 am and we were approaching Lundi Bridge when a pipe overlapping from a haulage truck cargo hit the bus’s windscreen and the bus swerved off the road and it overturned landing upside down.

Three people died on the spot and several others were seriously injured,” he said

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital Mortuary.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko referred all questions to National Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi.
