BURGLARS allegedly cut a hole through the roof at Bulawayo’s Richmond Spar and got away with more than $10,000. Reliable sources told The Chronicle the thieves struck between 3AM and 4AM on Sunday. They allegedly emptied the supermarket’s safe which had about $7,000, R 12,300 and P 4,450.

Bulawayo Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said police were investigating the break-in. She urged businesspeople to heed police advice and avoid keeping large sums of money in their premises. Insp Simango said by keeping large sums of money they become vulnerable to continuous theft.

“As police we’re appealing to members of the public not to keep large sums of money in their premises. We’ve been educating the business community to bank their money but this seems to be falling on deaf ears,” said Insp Simango.

“The problem we’re having is that some of these business people believe they’re immune to robberies. They only become concerned after falling victim to thieves.”

She said companies should reinforce their security so that they do not become easy targets for robbers.

“They should employ target hardening techniques that include installing closed-circuit television. They should also install burglar bars and employ armed security guards,” she said.

The police spokesperson warned the thieves that the law will catch up with them.

“It’s a matter of time before we arrest them. We’ll arrest them. The law will take its course,” said the police spokesperson.

In August, police arrested three suspected burglars who had been terrorising businesses as they broke into several premises in the city getting away with thousands of dollars.

The robbers were using a grinder to break into premises targeting safes.

The trio Agrippa Mloyi, 35, his brother Nqobile Mloyi, 33, and their accomplice were arrested following a tip off from members of the public.

They were said to be leading a group of thieves who had been using the same method to rob premises in the city.

Over the past few weeks Bulawayo has recorded an increase in the number of unlawful entry and theft with schools being the main target for the break-ins.
