The local business community has hailed the government’s stance on the re-introduction of the Zimbabwean dollar. After Zanu-PFs resounding victory in the elections, there were fears on the market that the local currency which stopped circulating in 2009 at the height of hyper-inflation, would be re-introduced. However the central bank governor Dr Gideon Gono has said there were no immediate plans to re-introduce the local currency.

A small business operator who identified himself as Mr Ncube said rumours of the impending return of the Zimbabwe dollar had made him uncertain about the future of his business.

“As for me, I was afraid because I thought I was going to lose my money and all that I have worked for.”
A businesswoman who owns a boutique in the city said she was worried about reports of the return of the local currency.

Businessman Mr Sipho Ngwenya said assurances from the RBZ governor had settled him.
“I am very happy about what the governor said concerning the Zimbabwean dollar issue, I can now do my business freely and I am even willing to invest more in it because I know the future is certain,” he said.

“We are happy that the use of multi-currencies will continue because we thought maybe in a few months time we will be using the Zimbabwean dollar,” said Mr Ncube.
