THE Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) has postponed its awards presentation ceremony which were set for this weekend.
They will now be held on August 23 at Harare’s Prince Edward High School.  The awards are meant to honour winners from this year’s national events all around the country.

Joe Mujuru, the secretary-general of the BUZ confirmed that the event had been postponed and a new venue and date will be set after consultation with sponsors.

“BUZ officials have met with some sponsors and agreed on a new date and venue for the BUZ awards,” he said

It will be the first time that they hold such an event. Outstanding players in the Garure Memorial (Harare), BOB 90 (Gweru) and inter-provincial tournaments will be honoured.

Also to be considered are those who starred in the National Association of Secondary School Heads, provincial championships and men’s teams JCB, Mercenaries, Unicorns, Mavericks, Cameo and women’s teams Raiders, Midlands State University, Lakers and Vixens who were outstanding in the just ended season. The national club champions, Youth Games champions and the Under-18 girls team that represented the country in Botswana who are now ranked fourth in Africa are expected to be part of the proceedings.

Mujuru said; “It is the first time that Zimbabwe is going to be holding national basketball awards and we are appealing to the Zimbabwean community to support us.”

Mujuru said the national association was working on introducing a National Super Eight League in September to improve the standards of the game.

“The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe has been working on a Super Eight League, which is set to start in September if all goes well,” said Mujuru.
