POLAND’S Tomasz “Kredka” Kowalkowski has replaced Congolese Ricky Misholas in the cage fight encounter against Bulawayo-born Elvis “Bulawayo Bomber” Moyo in the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Africa heavyweight bout set for Carnival City,Johannesburg on June 6.

It will be the Zimbabwean heavyweight pugilist’s second fight of the year and he will want to register his fourth consecutive win to enhance his chances of getting a shot at the title bout.

Moyo’s last fight was a win against Lance Cerenio in February at the same venue.

In a telephone interview from his Johannesburg base yesterday, Moyo, who has been struggling to get challengers for his World Boxing Federation African heavyweight title he won in 2013, confirmed the change of opponent for his cage fight.

The Tshaka Youth Centre product said Misholas withdrew from the bout on Saturday citing a shoulder injury and was confident of beating Kowalkowski.

“I’m ready for the fight. I’ve been working very hard preparing for Misholas but now I’ll be fighting Kowalkowski from Poland. I believe this is a good opportunity to show the world that I deserve to compete with the best. Cage-fighting is big in Europe and hopefully a victory on June 6 will aid my ambition of getting more overseas opponents as I’m struggling to get opponents here,” said Moyo.

According to the EFC official website, Kowalkowski enters the EFC Hexagon with a 4-1 record consisting of decision and knockout victories. He trains at the The Mighty Bulls gym in the Poland coastal city of Gdynia.

Kowalkowski towers above his competitors at a staggering two metres tall. With a lean frame, Kowalkowski uses his reach well to set up for his wrestling and takedowns where he is strongest.

The Polish will be a massive test for Moyo, who has the knockout power and has shown huge improvement in his ground game. Beating Kowalkowski would present Moyo with his best chance of landing a title fight.

The Bulawayo Bomber has had six fights at the EFC Championship Africa, winning four and losing two. His victories were against Sors “Guru” Grobbelaar in his debut cage fight in March 2014, Wilhelm “Tiny” Strauss in August and Didier-Kilola in November. Cerenio was Moyo’s last victim.

The Bulawayo Bomber’s defeats were against Brendon Groenwald in May and Andrew Van Zyl in July of last year.
