SOUTHERN Region Division One League champions Bulawayo Chiefs have set their sights on a treble after lifting the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Invitational Cup on Saturday.

A priceless goal by Fortune Nkomozana secured Chiefs the Trukumb Mining Enterprises sponsored trophy and $2 400 prize money at the expense of Talen Vision, who took home $1 500.

Chiefs coach Thulani Sibanda yesterday said they had shifted focus to the John Landa Nkomo Memorial Cup. Chiefs will face Bosso 90 in Wednesday’s semi-final, while ZPC Hwange seek to go past Makomo in the coal mining town derby.

“We’re happy that we won the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo trophy after the league title. The guys really deserve this and now our focus turns to the John Landa Nkomo Memorial tournament. We face Bosso 90, a side full of energy. We respect them and our aim is to go all the way to the final and possibly win it as well. With the kind of attitude the players are showing, we can do it,” said Sibanda.

Liquor Hub are bankrolling the tournament to the tune of $5 000. Winners of the cup will get $1 300, while the runners up will take home $600 and losing semi-finalists $300.

On their way to lifting the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Cup, Chiefs beat ZPC Hwange 5-4 after penalty shootouts in the first round. The two sides had deadlocked 1-1 in regulation time. Chiefs went on to hammer Matabeleland North Under-20 Select 4-1 in the semi-finals.

Talen Vision beat army side Indlovu Iyanyathela 2-1 in the first round and cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Bulawayo Under-20 Select.

Talen Vision secretary Mishon Tsabalaka hailed his players for their run in the tournament.

“The guys gave a good fight and it was a tightly contested game against the league champions. We wanted to end the season with a trophy, but then Chiefs got that goal and now we have to look forward to next season. Hopefully we will be able to pick up from where we left,” Tsabalaka said. — @ZililoR
