BULAWAYO Athletics Board chairman Manuel Mpofu was over the moon after the provincial team retained the national cross country championships held at Morris Depot in Harare yesterday. The cross country event was held over 6KM and 8KM for junior women and junior men respectively, while the senior men and women competed over 10KM.
Harare emerged second and Midlands settled for third place.

“This shows that we are developing good athletes every year as we managed to dominate the cross country event again this year. We hope for the same performance in the track and field event,” said Mpofu.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) president Tendai Tagara hailed Bulawayo province for successfully defending their national cross country title.

Tagara said yesterday’s display was an indication that the province was serious about cross country and athletics in general.
“Bulawayo showcased good energy and performances. We hope other provinces can show such enthusiasm for our athletics to improve,” said Tagara.

Meanwhile, the national track and field championships are scheduled for next week at White City Stadium.
