THE Bulawayo Metropolitan Tennis Association (BMTA) will hold their elective general meeting at the Bulawayo Athletic Club (BCD) next Tuesday. Outgoing chairman Zeb Mawisire said the provincial board’s annual general meeting will precede the elections, which will usher in new office bearers.

Mawisire called for interested tennis administrators to attend their congress to help develop the sport in Bulawayo.

“I’ve exhausted my time and I feel it’s the right time for someone else to lead the board. I hope someone new with fresh ideas will come up because over the years we’ve been recycling leadership and we need new faces who can take tennis in Bulawayo to another level,” said Mawisire.

“Most members of the board are coaches and for them to do administrative and coaching duties is taxing hence the need to have people that will concentrate entirely on the administrative stuff.”

Other members of Mawisire’s BMTA board include vice-chairperson Nomvelo Ngwenya, treasurer Adam Joelson, secretary-general Raggs Chikunikuchawa and committee member Petros Ndlovu.

Mawisire runs an academy at Whitestone Primary and also conducts coaching clinics at Mabhukudwane, JW Mthimkhulu and Mafela, while Joelson coaches Girls’ College.

Chikunikuchawa has been providing coaching lessons at the Dominican Convent and Ndlovu offers training lessons at the Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC).

Meanwhile, registration for Bulawayo’s twin junior tennis tournaments, the Bulawayo Open and Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Memorial competitions, which will be played next month, are still open.

The Bulawayo Open will run from April 3-5 and the Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Memorial from April 6-8.

Both tournaments are open to players in the Under-10, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 age groups.
