BULAWAYO athletes are set to converge at White City Stadium this Sunday to compete for a place in the provincial team for the National Youth Games to be held in Mutare next month.

The event will provide the last chance for athletes hoping to secure places in the Bulawayo provincial team and all those who wish to take part are required to pay $1 as registration fees.

Among the Bulawayo clubs that have confirmed participation in the event are Sparrows, Ihlosi, Luveve and Northlea Athletics clubs as well as individuals from schools and tertiary institutions in the province.

Organisers have invited Blanket Mine, Mbizo High School from Kwekwe, Tinago Athletics Academy (Harare) and Freda Rebecca (Bindura) to make the selection process more competitive.

The clubs from outside Bulawayo province will also be using the event as a practice session ahead of their own provinces’ selection processes.

Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) chairman Manuel Mpofu said some prominent athletes such as Cynthia and Simbarashe Daderera, Nigel Tom, Sandra Taderera and Thando Maphosa, will participate in the races.

“The event will comprise different age groups, including cadets, juniors and youths,” said Mpofu.

He said the best athletes would be selected to represent Bulawayo.

Places would be up for grabs in the track and field disciplines, which include the 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 1500M, 100M medley and 400M medley.

Field disciplines will include high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin and shot putt.

Mpofu said clubs should not take this event for granted as this could be the last competitive practise for the athletes.
