The Senior Minister of State in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, has called on traditional leaders to work with the government towards the implementation of the Zim-Asset economic blueprint.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the annual chiefs’ conference in Gweru last week, Cde Khaya Moyo said the traditional leaders should work closely with the government and local authorities to implement the economic plan.

Cde Khaya Moyo said the major achievements since independence were largely due to the fact that traditional leaders were part of the development agenda.
“In keeping with your representative role, chiefs should champion initiatives in sync with the Zim-Asset agenda.

“We want you to work closely with the government and local authority representatives on the ground so that we mobilise our people to fully play their part in the implementation of the Zim-Asset,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.

“Zimbabwe is not a poor country, we are richly endowed in terms of natural resources. In addition thanks to the immense effort of our government, we have a highly educated and knowledgable population.

“Working together, let us explore ways of optimally tapping from our resources.”
Cde Khaya Moyo said the government had already demonstrated its motivation and commitment to successfully implementing Zim-Asset as evidenced by the launch of the Kariba South Power Expansion Project by President Mugabe recently.

“This is in addition to several infrastructural development projects that were agreed by the government of Zimbabwe and the Chinese during the President’s recent visit to China.

“These projects will ignite a massive economic growth that will create tens of thousands of new jobs in the next five years,” he said.
Cde Khaya Moyo said the country was under threat of neo-colonialism, “largely because of the government’s people centred programmes like the land reform programme, indigenisation and empowerment, among others.

“Thus due to the above threats, we call upon you, our traditional leaders, to utilise the age old leadership skills that have been honed through centuries of evolution. Let us therefore remain resolute.

“I know that a lot still needs to be done but I know it is possible as you our esteemed traditional leaders lead from the front, championing for the emancipation of your people as you have always done,” he said.

He paid tribute to chiefs and traditional leaders for standing by the ruling party in last year’s harmonised elections.
“We did not only romp to victory but did so in a very peaceful manner.

“Indeed, I want to thank you for positively responding to President Mugabe’s call for non violence during the elections.
“Now that we’ve won the elections and as a result unyoked ourselves from dysfunctional government of national unity, we’re now working on translating our manifesto into concrete deliverables to enhance the livelihoods of our people hence the Zim-Asset,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
