SEVEN pupils and a driver were stung by a swarm of bees whose hive was disturbed when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and hit an electricity pole in Romney Park suburb in Bulawayo. The accident occurred at around 7AM along Airport Road last Tuesday, when two vehicles collided and one them hit the pole.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Province police spokesperson, Inspector Precious Simango said eight people were stung by bees following the accident.

“I can confirm that seven pupils and a driver were stung by bees after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident. “One driver failed to give way and a vehicle veered off the road and hit a Zesa pole which had a bee hive” she said.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Richard Peterson said the fire fighters had to deal with the bees first before rescuing the accident victims. “They used high pressure water pipes to drive away the bees. Seven pupils and a female driver were stung and were rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment,” he said.

Dumani Matsa, a witness said the bees attacked passengers in the two vehicles.
