From the beginning of the month many people have planned and waited eagerly for the day and we are just hours away.
Many who will be celebrating the day at home are running around as they make last minute shopping and decorate party venues.
People celebrate Christmas Day in many ways. In the days or even weeks before Christmas Day, many people decorate their homes and gardens with lights, Christmas trees and other such stuff.

It is on this day that families usually have special meals in the company of friends and relatives. Turkey meat is considered one of the special meals for such occasions. Children look forward to being showered with gifts that include new clothes.
Christmas Day has over the years been commercialised as it is that time of the year when families spent extravagantly to spoil especially the young children.

The day often starts with a church service for Christian families.
Saturday Leisure talked to some of Bulawayo’s prominent people to find what they understand about Christmas and how they are going to spend the day.
Popular actress and Fingers Modelling Agency instructor Sarah Mpofu-Sibanda said to her, Christmas time was a time of giving and sharing.

“Well to me, Christmas is a time of giving as well as celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
“I believe in spending the day with my family, my husband, in-laws and friends,” said Mpofu-Sibanda.
She said this year they had planned a “bring and share” Christmas.

“This year we are bringing food from our different houses so that we share as we enjoy the day,” she said.
Highlanders former coach Mkhuphali Masuku said he would be relaxing and spending time with family and friends.
“This is the time for me to relax as I ponder on my next move. It was a long season so I will be at home with my family and friends,” he said.

Former Highlanders defender and captain Gilbert Banda who is headed for FC Platinum also said he would be with his family.
“This is an important day in our family so we will be at home with family and friends. This is the time to have a meal together in one place,” he said.
City socialite and businessman Babongile Sikhonjwa said to him Christmas was just like any other day.

“To me, Christmas is just an ordinary day and it is a time for us people in the showbiz industry to make money.
“It’s time for us to capitalise as people spend a lot of money celebrating the day,” said Sikhonjwa.

He said as a businessperson he would be at work.
“Unfortunately, I cannot go on holiday and usually I fight with my family and loved ones, as I am not able to be with them.”

The beginning of the festive season is usually characterised by an influx of injiva and heavily loaded omalayitsha bringing groceries and goods home.
