Chapungu seek Flame Lily scalp

HIGH flying Chapungu would relish the chance of stretching their unbeaten run to eight matches when they take on prisons and correctional services side, Flame Lily in a Castle Lager premiership match at Ascot Stadium today.“Waru Waru” have since their one nil win against Highlanders amassed 17 out of a possible 21 points, results which have seen the Gweru based airmen storm into the top four.

Central to Chapungu’s resurgence is nomadic striker, Tinei Chitora who is enjoying a new lease of life at the airmen following a largely unsuccessful stint at Triangle last season.

The bustling striker, who has also seen action at Blue Rangers, ZPC Kariba and Dynamos among other clubs, has been on a free scoring reign at Chapungu after having netted five goals so far.

The form has seen his name being thrown around as a strong contender for player of the month.

Chapungu gaffer, John Nyikadzino, whose exploits also deserve recognition, described Chitora’s as a “regular scorer who was the missing link” last season.

“Tinei (Chitora) has brought experience into the side and as a regular scorer he was the missing link in our campaign last season since we did not have anyone we could rely on to score goals regularly. However, I am not taking anything away from the team because it is the team effort which has taken us this far.

“As for the game tomorrow (today) it’s going to be a tough match but I’m confident that we will win. The boys are confident and have the self belief so there is nothing which can stand in our way,” said Nyikadzino who is also a top contender for the coach of the month gong.

However, Chapungu should be warned against underestimating Flame Lily following the prison wardens’ two nil win over Buffaloes.

Head coach, Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera said the win was a morale booster and he would take the positives from the Buffaloes match to Ascot Stadium today.

Said Yabo: “The win was good for the boys since it boosted their morale. However, Chapungu have been playing well lately so we are expecting a tough match. We have enough arsenal that we can unleash to come out with a positive result at Ascot.”
