A 26-year-old Bulawayo man who bashed his wife after catching her in bed with another man, will have to perform 105 hours of community service.

Celani Webster told the court yesterday that he failed to contain his anger when he discovered that his wife, Grace Sibanda, 31, was cheating on him and assaulted her.

“Your owner I admit to the charge levelled against me. I assaulted her because I caught her sleeping with another man and that angered me. I couldn’t control myself,” said Webster.

Provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo sentenced him to three months in prison.

Two months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour while the other month was further suspended on condition that Webster performs 105 hours of community service at Old Pumula Police Station.

Prosecuting Mufaro Mageza told the court that Webster stormed into a house where Givemore Beru was drinking beer with his wife at around 11PM.

Webster demanded to know why Sibanda was cheating on him but got no reply.

This incensed Webster who then started assaulting Sibanda with open hands and fists several times on her face and all over the body.
Webster went on to grab Sibanda’s hair and dragged her for a distance of about 10 metres.

Sibanda sustained some bruises, a swollen face and had red eyes as a result of the assault.

She reported the matter to the police leading to Webster’s arrest.
