CASTLE Lager Premier Soccer League champions Chicken Inn will rest the duo of skipper Danny “Deco” Phiri and striker Edmore “Spanner” Chirambadare for their final game of the season against Flame Lily at Lafarge tomorrow. The Gamecocks’ coach Joey Antipas said the decision to rest the two is meant to make them legible for Soccer Stars of the Year selection.

Phiri has five yellow cards and a red card while Chirambadare has five yellow cards and if they were to pick yellow cards tomorrow, they will be struck off the list of players that will be considered for the 2015 stars calendar. According to the selection rules, any player who accumulates six yellow cards or more during the course of the season will be disqualified.

The same will apply to a player who accumulated two or more red cards during the course of the season up to selection time.

“Now that we’ve won the championship we will rest Deco (Phiri) and Spanner (Chirambadare) because they’re in danger of missing out from the stars’ selection. They are just a card away each from getting barred and for that reason, we’ve decided to rest them and give game time to some of our fringe players.

“To us the game against Flame Lily is not a dead rubber because we want to end the season on a high note and whoever will replace them will do a good job,” said Antipas. Delta Beverages have maintained last year’s prizes with the winner of the top accolade set to walk away with $5,000 while the runners-up get $3,000 and $2,000 respectively. The 11 finalists will each pocket $1,000.

Selection of the 2015 Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year will be done on Monday in Harare. Coaches, captains and members of the media will electronically cast their votes for the outstanding 2015 players.

A player who has been summoned and found guilty by the PSL disciplinary committee or courts of law during the season will also be disqualified. Already ruled out is Stephen Alimenda of Dynamos who was found guilty by the PSL disciplinary committee for insulting and assaulting a Tsholotsho FC medic during his team’s league match at Rufaro early this season.

Takesure Chinyama and Roderick Mutuma who appeared before the league’s disciplinary committee yesterday facing charges of manhandling referee Philani Ncube after Dynamos’ defeat against Harare City in the Chibuku Super Cup final, could be ruled out of selection if found guilty of the incident which was captured on television.

Phiri and Chirambadare have been in good form for the Gamecocks. They are likely to make it into the country’s best 11 players alongside teammates Clemence Matawu and goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.

Other players that are likely to make it into the Soccer Stars’ calendar are the league’s top goal scorer with 14 goals Knox Mutizwa of Highlanders, FC Platinum’s duo of Kevin Moyo and Brian Muzondiwa, Stephen Makatuka of Caps United, ZPC Kariba’s Raphael Manuvire, Dynamos’ goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva and Hillary Bakacheza of Triangle.
