RETAIL giant Choppies Enterprises Zimbabwe has invested $60 million this year for expansion as it seeks to consolidate its foothold in the retail sector.

The group has set up 25 shops countrywide with a total of six in Harare.

Choppies director Siqokoqela Mphoko said the group is targeting to open four shops in the country by year end.

He was speaking at the official opening of the group’s sixth branch in Harare along Robert Mugabe Road yesterday.

The new shops will be opened in Gweru and Bulawayo.

“We’ve invested $60 million this year for expansion in Zimbabwe and we’re bringing new machinery and equipment in all our supermarkets.

“We’re now preparing for investments for next year.

“The expansion is a result of a good business environment, which we’re experiencing in the country and we want to prove that business is possible in Zimbabwe,” he said.

Choppies employs 2,000 workers around the country. Choppies entered the local market after buying Bulawayo-based businessman Raj Modi’s investment company, Modi Enterprises, for $21,2 million.— BH24
