CHOPPIES Zimbabwe will before the end of the year commission five new branches across the country and the retail chain’s latest outlet will be officially opened by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko in Mutare tomorrow.

The opening of the branch will bring to 21 the number of the retail chain’s branches in the country.

Choppies Zimbabwe director Siqoqoqela Mphoko told Business Chronicle that plans were at an advanced stage to bring their branch network in Bulawayo to 17 by opening more outlets before the end of the year.

In Harare, he said the retail chain presently has three branches and they were targeting to add two more branches before year end.

The retailer also has two other branches in Gwanda and Bindura.

“On Friday (tomorrow) we’ll be opening our first branch in Mutare. VP Mphoko who is a shareholder in Choppies will officially open the branch in Mutare.

“Currently, we’re renovating a building in Bulawayo’s Luveve high density suburb and another one in the Central Business District. Two more buildings are also under renovation in Harare as part of our preparations to add the number of our branches in Harare,” he said.

Mphoko said their long-term goal was to continue spreading their tentacles across the country.

“We’re very happy to be part of this economy and we’ve seen that this economy has a lot of opportunities and potential from which we can tap into while creating employment,” he said.

Choppies Zimbabwe, which employs about 2,000 people is eying $350 million turnover by 2018.

Choppies Zimbabwe is a joint venture between Botswana’s Choppies Enterprises and the Mphoko family.

The group entered Zimbabwe through the acquisition of 10 retail stores under Sai Enterprises and Chrissfontein Marketing in Bulawayo.

In the long-term, the retailer is targeting 60 plus outlets in Zimbabwe.
