THOMAS Classen won the Mutual Cycling Club Under-20 race held in the outskirts of the Bulawayo yesterday in a time of one hour 27 minutes 05 seconds. The competition was over 50km with the competitors cycling from the Tshabalala Sanctuary Entrance to the Matobo Police Station turn off along the Kezi Road and back to the starting point.

It was a tight finish for the top three finishers as only three seconds separated them.

“The race went well. There was good competition and the times bear testimony to that as it was a sprint finish,” said John Machekera, the club’s director.

He said the weather was ideal for cycling.

“It was perfect weather, no injuries. The environment was good with little showers on the way and the guys gave it their best,” said Machekera.

Classen received R700 for his efforts.

Second spot went to Isheunesu Nyoni who clocked one hour 27 minutes 07 seconds with third spot occupied by Alexander Welsh in one hour 27 minutes 08 seconds.

The second and third placed cyclists pocketed R400 and R200 respectively. It was the second event to be hosted by the recently formed club.

“We’ve a lot in store lined up for next year including taking the sport to the people,” said Machekera.

Only one woman, Charity Zineme, took part in the event.
