A POLICEMAN based at Nkulumane Police Station in Bulawayo has been arrested for allegedly stealing $80 in fines from the station.

Abel Moyo, 38, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Tancy Dube facing three counts of theft.

He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody to today for sentencing.

“Your worship there are no hidden intentions behind taking the money, it was mere negligence,” said Moyo.

The court heard that Moyo stole the money together with three deposit fine books on three different occasions.

Prosecuting, Kenneth Shava said on December 19, 2015 at around 8.45PM, Moyo commenced duty at ZRP Nkulumane and was in charge of shift two.

Constable Junior Munhenzva handed over the charge office to him.

“The hand over included the deposit fine book with a deposit of $35. The accused did not hand over the money and the book to the incoming officer. Instead he took the money and converted it to his own use,” said Shava.

The prosecutor said during the same month on a different shift, Moyo stole another $35 in police fines.

“On December 21, 2015 at around 1.45PM, the accused commenced duty at ZRP Nkulumane Charge office as he was in charge of shift two and was handed over the charge office by Constable Lwazilwenkosi Ncube. The handover included a deposit fine book with a deposit of $35.

“The accused did not hand over the money to the incoming shift but instead he took the money and converted it to his own use,” said Shava.

He said on January 1, Moyo again did not surrender $10 to the incoming officer as he left for home.

The crime was discovered on January 13 and he was arrested.

Three deposit fine books were found at Moyo’s home.
