GWERU City Council has resolved to engage agents to sell parking discs to improve revenue collection. The prepaid parking system was introduced in Gweru in 2012. At a recent special full council meeting, councillors noted that the local authority was losing substantial amount of revenue as some of the parking disc team members were receiving bribes.

“We are failing to collect what we should be collecting and soon as we sign contracts with the agents, we want to ensure that every cent is remitted and goes into the council coffers unlike the present situation where some of our parking disc teams are lining up their pockets, ” said Mayor Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi.

In June, the local authority flighted a tender notice for the supply and installation of a parking management system and 500 motor vehicle clamps.

Cllr Kombayi said those who won the tenders would be announced in due course and will be mandated to ensure that sanity prevails in the streets.

City fathers were concerned about the visibility of parking clerks in the city centre.

The engagement of agents would result in motorists being able to conveniently buy parking discs.

The agents will be authorised to deploy their own vendors on to the streets to sell the local authority’s parking discs.

Of late, a number of local authorities have resorted to introducing pre-paid parking discs and clamping vehicles to widen their revenue base.
