Ward 25 councillor Mzama Dube has been accused of defrauding Nketa residents of cash under the pretext of getting them residential stands from the Bulawayo City Council.
Residents alleged yesterday that Clr Dube, on being elected to office in July last year, told them that council had awarded councillors about five infill residential stands in every ward.

One of the residents, George Mapidza, alleged that Clr Dube had conned him out of $600.
Another resident who declined to be named said Clr Dube defrauded him of $2,000, saying he would get him one of the stands.

“I do not want this issue to be solved through the Press. However, I can confirm that I paid $600 to councillor Dube in August after he told me that council had given him five infill residential stands to sell to deserving residents. I have not received the stand yet and the councillor has not refunded me,” said Mapidza.

The other resident said Dube had since paid back most of the money.
“He has paid back most of the money although I had a torrid time getting it. I heard he is in the habit of taking people’s monies and not paying them back. In 2011, when he was the treasurer of MDC ward 25 burial society, he squandered about $400 of the society’s money. A senior party official had to pay it on his behalf when members said he should be taken to the police.”

Contacted for comment yesterday, Clr Dube denied the allegations.
“I know Mapidza and I owe him about $500. He told me yesterday that he had talked to someone at Chronicle about the issue. However, the truth of the matter is that I owe him for something else. I never promised anyone a stand. Everyone knows that the procedure for getting a stand does not involve councillors but is done by council officials,” said Clr Dube.

He said the allegations were fuelled by his enemies who lost to him in the council elections.
“I know the people who are telling you all these lies. You can tell they have a score to settle by the fact that they raised the burial society issue, which was resolved a long time ago. I respect other people and their money and all those allegations are false,” said Clr Dube.
