ROUND 12 of the Absa Premiership played over this weekend saw Cape Town City further entrench themselves at the top of the log with a stunning win over Bidvest Wits, while Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates once again flattered to deceive.

The round got under way on Friday night with a five-goal thriller between Wits and Cape Town City.

The Clever Boys came back twice from a goal down to draw level with the Citizens, but in the end the Cape side claimed all three points with a 3-2 scoreline thanks to a late winner from Lebogang Manyama – his second goal of the game in what is an increasingly impressive season from the attacker.

Moving onto Saturday’s action, the afternoon matches saw Mamelodi Sundowns trounce Free State Stars 4-1 thanks to a brace from promising youngster Percy Tau (in the Brazilians’ last domestic game before going to the Club World Cup in Japan), while Platinum Stars suffered a fourth successive loss when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Polokwane City.

The headline result in the evening was Chippa United’s 3-1 trouncing of Kaizer Chiefs (who have now gone six league games without a win) thanks to a brace from Lerato Manzini, while Tendai Ndoro scored two further goals in his prolific season but it wasn’t enough for Orlando Pirates to beat Highlands Park, as they were held 2-2 at Orlando Stadium.

Elsewhere, Ajax Cape Town claimed a third successive win thanks to Nathan Paulse’s late penalty on Saturday night, while the Sunday games saw just one goal: Sheldon Van Wyk was on target for Maritzburg United in a 1-0 win at Baroka, and the match between Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United ended 0-0, though the former missed a late penalty. — SuperSport
