AMAKHOSI Cultural Centre’s “Plays on Sunday” programme will this week showcase their last play of the year – Big Girls Don’t Cry – as they pave way for the 9th edition of Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo scheduled for September 23-27.
The play, directed by Thembelihle Moyo, features Rachel Sithole, Delicacy Ngulube, Victoria Mbedzi and Donald Sibanda. It tells a story of three modern women with different personalities and backgrounds.

The play was extracted from Goodhope Mugwagwa’s novel Big Girls Don’t Cry and is being shown as part of the Women’s month       celebrations.

“The three modern women in the play are brought together by fate after they meet in a queue while waiting to be served by a well-known prophet in the city.

“The women comically share their secrets which are full of tears and laughter. At the end of the day, they decide that waiting for their turn to be served by the prophet is useless as the solution to their problems lies within them,” play director, Moyo said.

She said the play, through its different characters, seeks to reveal most of the things happening in modern families.
“One of the characters, Lester, is a fashion conscious lady who loves drinking and travelling around the world. She is a businessman’s wife with a husband who is bisexual.

“Another character, Fefea, is a 40-year-old teacher who is a Seventh Day Adventist Church member. She is forced to visit the prophet because her husband is sleeping around with younger girls.

“The third woman, Juju, is the stubborn one who has been impregnated twice by different married men,” Moyo said.
From Amakhosi, Big Girls Don’t Cry will be shown at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on August 29. Plays on Sunday will resume next year at the Amakhosi Cultural Centre.
